[0.0s] Previously on Dumbgeons and Dragons. [2.4s] As you quickly collect yourselves, you notice all of your members appear to be okay, except for Grancis. [9.8s] Off in the distance you see, cresting that hill is a soul humanoid in armor shaped as a dragon. [17.2s] Let them go and leave with your lives or me and my friend will destroy you all. [23.0s] I only see one of you, shouldn't be too much of a problem, do your worst! [26.8s] The black dragon circling above lets loose its breath weapon behind you, blocking your exit. [32.4s] Over the hill comes a plate armored blue dragon. [38.0s] See Grancis raises up off the deck and lets forth many lightning bolts shoot forward into each of the creatures still left standing. [49.4s] And all of those creatures drop to the ground dead. [52.8s] And you see Grancis' essence scatter. [57.4s] I'll always be with you. Always. [60.6s] Thea finds herself a little bit more upset about Grancis than she thought she would be. [66.8s] But excuse me, metal clad sir, what is your name? [71.4s] My name is Sir Largardt Willowden. [74.8s] The rousing banter continues for quite some time. [80.2s] And you all decide to go your separate ways. [86.8s] And you all set off along the trail saying your sweet goodbyes to your savior in the dragon scale armor. [96.6s] And head off towards the Misty Forest back on foot as you were many moons ago. [104.4s] Welcome to Dumbgeons and Dragons. [106.6s] We are a fifth edition actual play podcast and I am your dungeon master Russ More. [111.6s] And with me today is Amy More. [114.4s] Yeah, I love this energy. [117.2s] That was me being really enthusiastically excited. [120.8s] I love it. Right. [121.8s] Did you watch wrestling too on the weekend? [124.0s] I didn't, but I channeled my inner, I don't know, sweaty grapple. [133.6s] Any wrestler name. [135.6s] I also hear Tom Laird over there. [137.6s] Yeah. And Carla Johnson. [143.2s] Do it, Carla. [144.6s] Oh, you guys are the best. [146.8s] I was having a bad night and you just you guys make me so happy. [150.8s] Seriously. I mean, yeah, let's do this. [155.0s] That's what I mean. There it is. [156.4s] All right, brothers, let's get into this. [159.8s] I'll tell you what, brother. [161.2s] Can you smell what Paisley just did under this desk? [165.0s] Yeah. Smell like she stepped into a Slim Jim. [169.2s] Oh, yeah. [171.4s] I don't know that reference. [173.0s] Randy Savage, Slim Jim. [175.0s] Oh, yeah, Macho Man was like the the Slim Jim spokesman for a long time. [179.6s] Step into a Slim Jim. [181.4s] Oh, yeah. [183.4s] Oh, gosh, there's so many hand movements. [185.4s] That's because he's all about the hand. [187.2s] I was doing the hand movements too. [189.0s] I felt it. It was good. [190.2s] I wish we were video Skyping. [192.0s] Me too. [193.2s] This comes out February 14th. [194.8s] So happy birthday, Carla. [196.6s] Oh, yeah. Happy birthday, Carla. [199.6s] It's your birthday. [201.8s] Your happy podcast birthday. [203.6s] FYI, guys, I got Carla the best birthday present. [207.8s] You did. [208.8s] Yep. [210.0s] Okay, Carla, take your headphones off. [211.4s] What did you get her? [212.8s] Okay, I'm going to tell you right now. [215.2s] No, I'm not going to. It's going to be a surprise. [217.0s] Is it a Slim Jim? [219.0s] Oh, yeah. [220.4s] Yes. [222.6s] Carla, I'm sorry. [225.2s] And we've ruined her birthday. [227.2s] I love it. [227.8s] We're on Patreon. [228.8s] Check us out over there if you like what we do [231.6s] and want to find another way to support us. [239.4s] There are super sweet bonus episodes, [241.4s] which always get better and then decline a little bit and then get better. [246.8s] That's how you appreciate the really good ones. [249.6s] But Patreon.com slash dumb dragon cast. [251.8s] And you can check out all the rewards and tiers over there, [253.8s] which I have been tweaking a little bit. [255.8s] So there's some sweet stuff to get your hands on [259.2s] for being part of our community over there. [261.6s] And thank you to all of our patrons and listeners. [264.6s] We love you. [265.4s] Thanks, everyone. [266.0s] We do love you. [266.8s] I feel like I just said to Russ the other day, [268.8s] like I think the people that listen to our podcast [271.4s] are like probably the best people. [274.8s] Seems like it. [275.8s] Like we would be friends with them. [278.0s] Like IRL. [279.2s] Exactly. [280.0s] Real cool and super nice. [282.2s] Well, after we determined that it wasn't just Russ in fake mustaches. [286.4s] Well, I'm 99% sure that that's true. [289.6s] I was accused of that. [290.8s] No, fuck it. Let's play D&D. [294.4s] You've headed off from the burning city of Daggerford [298.2s] with its screaming people in the building [302.4s] and left the airship crashed at the side of the city [306.0s] and left your new friend flying off in the other direction [312.6s] and headed off towards the Misty Forest. [314.2s] But you've been wandering for about a day [316.4s] on the way to the Misty Forest [317.8s] and you find yourself at the edge of the Misty Forest about nightfall. [322.0s] Thaddeus is with you and he suggests that [324.6s] maybe we should camp here for the night before we head in there [328.4s] and just kind of get our wits about us. [331.4s] I thought that he was taking the grungs back. [334.8s] Yeah, he's there now. [336.8s] So let's talk about that. [338.2s] Let's talk about that. [339.4s] Thaddeus said he was going to go take the grungs back, [343.0s] but decided to kind of hang out [345.4s] and maybe he didn't give you an exact reason why. [348.8s] Thaddeus, we're really happy to have you along. [353.6s] But I have to ask, where are the grungs? [358.8s] The grungs are here with us. [361.8s] Like in your pocket or because there's a lot of them. [364.4s] Like a satchel? [366.6s] As you guys are asking him about various handbag attire, [371.2s] he pulls off his backpack [373.4s] and pulls out a long steel cylinder [377.2s] and on it, in very Granthus-like writing, [380.8s] it says, grungs, good for six months. [384.6s] Oh my gosh, he freeze dried them. [388.8s] And he opens it up and you look inside [391.2s] and there's their entire civilization. [394.2s] It looks like he shrunk them a little bit smaller even [399.8s] and made it so they could self-sustain [402.0s] for apparently six months. [405.0s] So I thought being that you guys are going into [409.0s] a bit of what could be a hairy situation, [411.6s] maybe I tag along. [413.2s] And he screws the top back on the lid [414.8s] and puts it back in his bag. [416.6s] Sounds like a pretty good plan. [418.2s] We'd love to have you with us. [419.8s] Can anyone else imagine the grungs to be like, [422.0s] The sun! [423.4s] And then he covers it back up and they're like, oh. [426.0s] Well, thank you, thank you, yes. [427.4s] And he goes about help setting up the fire [431.0s] and tents and bedrolls and everything. [433.8s] What are you guys doing? [434.8s] I'll probably go look for food. [437.4s] I guess we probably took some good supplies [439.6s] from our crashed ship, [441.2s] but you know, we're in the woods [443.4s] and that's like, I'm in my element. [446.4s] So I'm gonna go, I don't know, [449.0s] like not far from camp, [450.2s] but see if I can like, [451.8s] rustle up a rabbit or something [453.6s] for us to eat over our fire. [455.8s] Do we need firewood? [457.0s] Cause I've got a perfectly good ax for chopping. [459.8s] You can certainly chop some firewood. [462.2s] Thea, what are you doing? [463.6s] Thea pops a squat next to the old fire there [468.2s] and pulls out a joint and lights her up. [472.4s] And does as Thea do. [473.8s] Does as Thea do. [474.8s] And she looks over to Thaddeus [476.2s] and she gestures like, hmm? [479.2s] And he says, no, no, thanks. [482.2s] I'm good. [484.0s] But you could be better. [487.6s] First taste is free. [489.0s] All in the eye of the beholder, I guess. [492.0s] I'm okay for right now, thank you. [495.0s] Nulara, you go off into the woods [497.8s] and it's getting dark, [499.2s] but you go a little ways off the path. [501.8s] Make an investigation. [504.0s] 80. [505.2s] It doesn't take you long [506.4s] before you go into the woods [508.2s] and you hear what sounds like a boar. [512.6s] Not too far off the path. [514.8s] As you are well versed in the forest, [517.0s] you very stealthily sneak through the trees [519.8s] and come up behind about 20 yards out [522.8s] from a full grown boar. [527.4s] Those are very dangerous. [528.8s] I mean, at least in the human world. [530.4s] I don't know about in the D&D world. [532.2s] Tell me, is it really dangerous? [533.6s] Am I scared? [534.6s] No, no, you know, it's got two big tusks. [538.8s] So you know exactly what's going on with this boar [541.8s] and how best to take it down if you so desired. [547.4s] I probably don't. [549.2s] We don't have any way to preserve food. [550.8s] It would be wasteful to kill an animal that large [555.6s] when we couldn't eat it all before it would go bad. [560.8s] I don't think I would want to. [563.6s] I'm looking for one meal's worth of food. [566.8s] Yeah. [567.6s] Like a bird or a rabbit or something. [569.4s] Sure. [570.2s] You back off of the boar and quietly move away from it. [573.8s] Make another, just roll a d20 for me. [576.4s] I will. [577.8s] I rolled a two. [578.8s] So I think it's probably going to decide to kill me now. [584.2s] The boar follows you and recognizes you from its dark past. [590.4s] You killed its mother. [592.2s] Oh, no. [594.0s] I didn't add anything to that too, [595.4s] but I'm sure it doesn't matter. [596.8s] That's fine. [597.6s] That's fine. [598.4s] So you, yeah, you come across on your, [602.4s] as you're walking through, [603.6s] I'll give you a couple things that you see [605.4s] and you can determine what you would stop [608.2s] and try to take down. [611.0s] You see a deer. [615.4s] There are a couple owls up in the trees [618.0s] and you also see a few rabbits running around. [622.0s] Okay, definitely a rabbit. [623.4s] Deer, two big owls. [625.2s] That seems fucked up for some reason. [627.0s] You come back with an owl. [629.6s] Guacamole will probably eat you. [631.2s] Guacamole will not give me a ride next time. [633.6s] Also, they all just came from their university [635.6s] graduation ceremony, I assume. [640.4s] They have their caps on. [644.4s] So rabbit it is. [646.4s] How about a rabbit? [648.2s] Sure, just make a, [650.0s] what are you using to take it down? [651.8s] Oh, did you mean a skill or item? [654.6s] Either or. [656.0s] Are you using your hands [657.0s] or are you using a weapon of some sort? [659.0s] Oh my God, I'd love to watch someone [660.8s] try to catch a rabbit with their hands. [662.4s] There are going to be a couple more checks [663.8s] if that happens. [664.8s] I guess I have a light crossbow. [667.6s] So sure, let's give that a shot. [670.8s] I'm not going to flame sort it. [674.4s] And it's cooked now too. [675.8s] Pre-cooked, yeah. [677.0s] Exactly. [679.0s] It's convenience food. [681.6s] So I just rolled a nat 20 on rabbit hunting. [687.6s] Of course you did. [689.0s] Tell me how you skillfully murder this rabbit. [695.0s] I take one shot and it hits it [697.8s] in exactly the right place to kill it instantly [700.2s] so it feels no pain. [702.4s] Then I go collect it, [704.2s] say a brief prayer of thanks to the rabbit [707.0s] for giving its life so we could eat [708.6s] and then I collect it and take it back to camp. [711.2s] New Laura's got mad respect for nature. [715.2s] Clint, you're going to chop down some wood? [718.0s] Yes, sir. [719.4s] All right. [719.8s] Well, there's lots of trees. [721.6s] So are you going for a big tree, a little tree? [723.6s] What kind of tree are you going for here? [726.0s] I'm going to go for a medium plus size of tree. [730.4s] All right. [731.0s] All right. [732.2s] Give me give me a strength check [733.8s] to see how quickly you take down this piece of... [736.8s] That is a 21. [738.2s] Best rolls we've ever had. [740.2s] We're fucking catching dinner [742.0s] and chopping down firewood. [745.0s] It takes you a couple of swings, [746.2s] but yeah, you fell this tree [749.0s] and chop up what you need there [752.0s] and bring it back to the fire [756.6s] where Thea and Thaddeus are just sitting, waiting. [764.8s] He hops up and he says, [765.8s] oh, good, the firewood. [768.0s] I'll get started on the fire. [769.4s] So Thaddeus goes and starts up the fire. [771.2s] Are we all back here now? [772.4s] Yeah, everybody's back. [774.8s] I look at New Laura and I go, [777.6s] only one rabbit has a munchies. [784.4s] You'll be fine. [785.2s] We have lots of other supplies from the airship. [788.2s] Fair enough, fair enough. [789.2s] I pass her a bag of Cheezys. [792.0s] That's what rations means. [793.4s] I get that. [795.4s] Cheesy poofs. [797.2s] I look at them and go, [798.0s] I wish they were Cheetos. [800.0s] So yeah, Thaddeus goes and he starts the fire [802.2s] and everything gets cooking there. [804.8s] So wait, Thaddeus started the fire? [808.0s] I don't know. [808.6s] He hopped up because he was tired of sitting [810.8s] in awkward silence with Thea [812.0s] and came over and grabbed some wood for a meal. [813.8s] Well, we didn't start the fire. [816.4s] But was it always burning since the world was turning? [822.6s] Thank you, Amy. [823.2s] Thank you for fighting along with me. [824.0s] You're welcome. [824.6s] I totally caught on. [826.0s] Wait, Thaddeus started. [827.2s] I was like, well, we didn't start the fire. [833.0s] And he is... [835.0s] Just moving along. [837.8s] Everybody's sitting around and Thaddeus pipes up [840.8s] and he says, so... [844.8s] How long have you guys been around with Grancis? [847.6s] It seems like forever. [850.0s] You know, Grancis is one of those guys. [852.8s] It just it doesn't matter how long you're with him. [855.4s] It just seems like eternity. [858.8s] And then God rests his soul. [860.4s] Then it's gone all too fast, isn't it? [863.8s] Yeah, a little bit. [865.8s] Thea gets a little nostalgic. [867.4s] She's like, remember that time? [870.6s] He served us mashed potatoes and we all shrunk. [873.2s] Oh, I do remember that. [875.0s] Boy, do I. [876.6s] What a fun adventure that was. [879.2s] Yeah, he had a knack for messing up spells, didn't he? [888.2s] Well, sure saved our ass at the end. [890.8s] Yeah, he did. [892.0s] And the airship came in really handy a lot of times. [895.0s] He was a good guy. [896.0s] We weren't with him too long. [897.8s] And even in the time we knew him, we didn't spend a lot of time with him. [903.0s] He kind of just picked us up and shuttled us around. [906.8s] And that's mostly it, except for that whole mashed potato grung thing. [916.2s] Well, I spent some more time with Grancis. [920.2s] We had a bit of a falling out. [923.8s] But yeah, we traveled a lot back, well, when I was more your ages of sorts. [934.0s] We had a team of adventurers, you could say, who went on missions not unlike yourself. [942.4s] Not quite to the scale that you guys are doing here with the world saving. [946.0s] But I remember a time we were in the thick of a large battle with some goblins. [955.8s] We were supposed to go stop this tribe of goblins from wrecking this little civilization, [962.4s] this little settlement that was having problems with them. [966.2s] It was supposed to be an easy in-for-some-out job, that sort of thing. [970.2s] But their colony was much bigger than what we had been led on. [975.6s] We found ourselves with our backs against the wall, and then out of nowhere, [981.6s] Grancis remembers that he can polymorph things. [985.4s] And he polymorphed our fighter. [988.4s] What was his name? [990.4s] Romaine Broadsword. [992.8s] Polymorphed him into a T-Rex, just right there. [997.6s] Should have seen the look on those goblins' faces. [1000.8s] So awesome. [1003.0s] A T-Rex, you say? [1004.8s] Yeah. [1006.4s] Um... [1008.4s] I have a little question. [1011.4s] Yeah. [1012.4s] Now, we know that Grancis could do some awesome stuff. [1018.0s] Of course. [1020.0s] And he always had the best intentions. [1022.6s] Mm-hmm. [1024.6s] Did... [1026.2s] Did Mr. Broadsword ever make it back to his original form? [1031.2s] Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. [1033.8s] I was wondering the exact same thing. [1037.8s] We met a cool T-Rex, and I thought, it's a pretty small world. [1041.8s] It'd be pretty crazy if that T-Rex I made friends with [1045.8s] was actually Grancis' old friend that he didn't morph back. [1051.8s] No, yeah, I mean, he morphed back pretty soon after that. [1054.8s] I mean, what happened between polymorphings later? [1059.8s] I mean, I suppose anything is possible, but no, no. [1063.8s] Romaine, he turned back, just as you do, [1067.8s] after a polymorph spell, and he... [1070.8s] Yeah, he told that story a lot. [1073.8s] And was it just the three of you, [1075.8s] or was there other adventurers in your group? [1078.8s] No, we had a... [1080.8s] We had a team of eight of us. [1083.8s] Whoa. That's a lot. That's a lot. [1085.8s] Yeah. [1087.8s] You know, strength in numbers, as they say. [1090.8s] But yeah, we had a well-versed crew [1093.8s] who went out a lot of the time. [1095.8s] You guys ever fight a dragon? [1097.8s] Yeah, we fought a dragon before. [1100.8s] Did you win? [1102.8s] Well, we got away. [1105.8s] Hey, nothing's wrong with the win. [1108.8s] Not dying. It's the win in my column. [1111.8s] Yeah, I hear you guys have been going up against some dragons. [1115.8s] Well, obviously we have, because that was yesterday. [1118.8s] Well, yeah. [1120.8s] But others as well. [1122.8s] Thought you might have some hot tips, [1124.8s] some hot dragon-killing tips, but guess not. [1127.8s] Don't use your things that require saving throws. [1132.8s] Or just use lesser things with saving throws [1135.8s] and save your big stuff to the end. [1138.8s] Solid advice. [1140.8s] What's a saving throw, I mean? [1142.8s] I don't know. [1145.8s] A flash of things. [1147.8s] Some divine inspiration. [1149.8s] He says, oh, God, sorry, and fixes her top. [1152.8s] So... [1154.8s] Hasn't been a boob or a dick joke yet. [1157.8s] Yeah, it's true, and we're really far in, so it was good. [1160.8s] He needed to get it. [1162.8s] Thaddeus, how long do you think you're going to stay with us? [1166.8s] Do you have a plan, or are you just going to see how it goes? [1169.8s] No plan. [1171.8s] I mean, I came with you guys to help Grancis with the grungs, [1174.8s] but it seems that, you know, [1178.8s] our path has taken us, brought us together [1181.8s] for what's to come in this dragon, [1184.8s] cult of the dragon battle that we have going on here, [1188.8s] so I'll stick with you until it seems that I should go somewhere else. [1193.8s] What, uh... [1195.8s] Or you have enough with me. [1197.8s] Hey, if we could keep Grancis around for as long as we did. [1200.8s] I think you're all right. [1202.8s] Speaking of Grancis, and you don't have to tell me if you don't want to [1205.8s] because I'm just being snoopy, [1207.8s] but why do you guys have a falling out? [1210.8s] No, it's fine, it's fine. [1212.8s] We, um... [1214.8s] We were on another job. [1218.8s] This was, I don't know, 30 years ago or so. [1223.8s] And... [1227.8s] It wasn't looking good for us. [1232.8s] And Grancis, in his all, in his haste, [1239.8s] miscast a spell, a lightning bolt spell, [1244.8s] and it instead targeted our team [1249.8s] as well as the foes we were fighting. [1255.8s] It was a group of orcs and bugbears, [1259.8s] and they... [1261.8s] I was the only one that survived. [1266.8s] And after that, I just couldn't trust them anymore. [1270.8s] Well, that's reasonable. [1273.8s] That seems... [1275.8s] Well, first of all, terrible, I'm sorry, [1279.8s] but that is certainly a thing to end a friendship over. [1290.8s] But then you decided to help him with the grungs anyway? [1295.8s] I guess it had been a long time, but... [1298.8s] It had been a long time, and I'm a man of faith. [1303.8s] I've been holding back a lot of resentment towards him, [1308.8s] and I didn't want that to hold me back and to hold him back, [1312.8s] because I felt having that possible connection [1317.8s] could have propelled him back into what he could be. [1321.8s] So I took a chance. [1323.8s] He begins to get a little choked up, [1326.8s] and he says, [1329.8s] Well, it's getting late. I'll pack it in here. [1333.8s] You just wake me up when it's my turn for watch. [1336.8s] And he goes to his little tent [1341.8s] and lies down in the bedroll he has laid out there. [1345.8s] What do you guys do? [1347.8s] Probably the same, or else we just decide on watches and go to sleep. [1353.8s] Want to see you guys got any marshmallows? [1356.8s] You want to make some s'mores? [1359.8s] Theo wishes she had marshmallows. [1363.8s] I'll take first watch. [1366.8s] No, you did not. [1368.8s] If I fall asleep now, man, I'm not getting up. [1371.8s] That's true. You're all high and shit still. [1375.8s] All right, I'll take second watch then. [1378.8s] As you guys are determining watches, [1383.8s] some smoke comes off of the fire, [1387.8s] and it kind of hovers there for a minute. [1391.8s] You hear an eerie... [1402.8s] I say, Did anyone else hear that? [1406.8s] I look at my joint and I'm like... [1412.8s] You guys hear that? [1415.8s] How strong is that stuff, Theo? [1418.8s] I feel like it's affecting me. [1424.8s] I don't think it's this. [1427.8s] Grancis? [1429.8s] Oh, you can hear me. [1431.8s] Yeah. [1433.8s] What's up, G-man? [1435.8s] The smoke swirls into not a material form, [1439.8s] but more of a ghostly apparition of Grancis. [1444.8s] He says, Oh, I've been kind of hanging out [1446.8s] following you guys for a little while. [1449.8s] Must have been on ghosts and wind and stuff. [1452.8s] Maybe that just stopped it. [1455.8s] Anyways, thank you for saying all those nice things about me. [1460.8s] The mashed potatoes, they were really good. [1463.8s] You didn't mention the pancakes. [1465.8s] Those pancakes, man, they were legendary. [1468.8s] I was thinking about them. [1470.8s] Yeah, no, it appears. [1473.8s] Ghosts sometimes get locked to things [1476.8s] and then they can't leave. [1479.8s] I'm pretty sure I'm locked to the grungs. [1482.8s] Do you want us to tell Thaddeus [1484.8s] and get him to return them right away? [1488.8s] You think you've got to get them back home? [1491.8s] Don't tell Thaddeus that, [1494.8s] because he'll just want to... [1496.8s] You know, they're good for six months. [1498.8s] I packed them full of seeds and stuff down there [1501.8s] and they should be fine. [1503.8s] I think he really needs to be with you guys. [1506.8s] I'll just kind of hang out. [1509.8s] Grancis, what is the afterlife like? [1512.8s] Right now it's... [1515.8s] There was a bright light. [1520.8s] And then it's hard to keep myself together. [1525.8s] Did you go toward the bright light? [1527.8s] Yeah, and then it's just there. [1530.8s] I still see it. [1531.8s] And he points over your shoulder. [1533.8s] And you try going towards it. [1535.8s] Yeah, and I keep getting drawn. [1538.8s] It's like I'm walking [1541.8s] and he's moving his arms, [1543.8s] but he has no legs. [1544.8s] They're kind of the willy-willy wisp. [1546.8s] But I'm not going anywhere. [1549.8s] Do you see other ghosts? [1551.8s] Thea has a lot of questions. [1553.8s] I know, me too. [1554.8s] This is amazing. [1556.8s] We're building the whole afterlife right now. [1558.8s] This is creating a world of fantasy. [1560.8s] Are we surrounded by spirits we just can't see? [1563.8s] I mean, there's some spirits everywhere. [1565.8s] You should have known that. [1566.8s] You're tapped into the nature of the... [1568.8s] everywhere. [1570.8s] How are your senses? [1573.8s] Do they still function the same way? [1576.8s] You know, I... [1579.8s] No. [1580.8s] No, I can see everything. [1582.8s] I can hear... [1584.8s] Sometimes things get a little muddied [1587.8s] with the hearing. [1588.8s] It's like there's a barrier between [1591.8s] where the ghosts kind of hang out [1593.8s] and the spirits kind of hang out, [1595.8s] and sometimes you can kind of sneak through [1597.8s] and pop through like I'm doing right now. [1600.8s] But, you know, [1604.8s] I can't really hold anything to taste it. [1608.8s] I haven't figured that part out yet. [1610.8s] I've got to find someone to talk to back here. [1613.8s] Do you have friends? [1615.8s] I mean, I've been dead for less than 24 hours, [1618.8s] so it's tough to make friends right away. [1620.8s] Yeah, it would be for you. [1621.8s] Yeah. [1626.8s] Thea says it really sincerely. [1629.8s] That was out of game laughter. [1631.8s] Oh, yeah. [1632.8s] Oh, totally. That was out of game laughter. [1634.8s] That was Carla laughing at Amy being hilarious, [1637.8s] not new Laura laughing at Thea. [1641.8s] No, I think it's being really earnest. [1643.8s] Like, yeah, you're a handful, man. [1645.8s] Like, yeah, you're going to need more than 24 hours there, buddy. [1648.8s] Yeah, no, I get it. [1651.8s] And, you know, hopefully sometime fall goes to plan. [1655.8s] I'll be able to be able to reach that light at the end there, [1658.8s] and maybe I'll see some friends. [1662.8s] So you haven't got any like great knowledge [1666.8s] that you could share with us [1668.8s] that you didn't have before you passed. [1672.8s] Yeah, can you read our minds? [1675.8s] Thea starts thinking real hard about stuff. [1679.8s] Big bag of dicks. [1684.8s] No, I agree. [1685.8s] Now is it like a tote bag? [1687.8s] Is it like a plastic shopping bag? [1688.8s] Like, what are we going with here? [1690.8s] Oh, no. [1691.8s] No, I'm getting a visual of you and a dragon [1694.8s] thinking of a big bag of dicks. [1696.8s] Oh, I must be able to see the future or past or something. [1700.8s] Hmm, that's weird. [1702.8s] No, I don't have any great ideas for you right now, [1705.8s] but I feel like that I've become this plot device [1708.8s] that if something needs to be said, it can be said. [1711.8s] Self-righteous of you. [1713.8s] Oh, you know, I'm Francis. [1717.8s] But yeah, if I find anything out, [1719.8s] I'll gladly let you know. [1722.8s] Come up with some questions. [1724.8s] I'll see if I can figure them out. [1726.8s] We were just going to like go to sleep now. [1728.8s] Is there anything we can do for you? [1731.8s] No, no, I just want to touch base. [1734.8s] I'm going to go see what's going on behind the muffly part [1737.8s] of where the rest of the spirits are. [1739.8s] I see what's going on there. [1741.8s] I'll just, you know, if you think you need me, [1744.8s] just don't tell Thaddeus that I'm here [1746.8s] because he'll try. [1748.8s] He doesn't like spirits hanging in limbo. [1750.8s] He likes to move things along. [1752.8s] Just, you know, do your business, OK? [1755.8s] Is there any way we can contact you? [1758.8s] Or do we just have to wait till you pop back [1761.8s] into our fire smoke? [1763.8s] Oh, I think you just got to wait until I pop back [1766.8s] and he pops away. [1767.8s] OK. [1769.8s] All right, well. [1772.8s] You guys. [1773.8s] Hey. [1774.8s] Wow, that's a thing, hey? [1776.8s] Just when you think. [1778.8s] He's gone for good. [1780.8s] Yeah, it's again just night and you guys are... [1784.8s] Thaddeus stays up. [1786.8s] I'm leaning against a log. [1789.8s] I've put away my joint because I am on watch. [1793.8s] Yeah, no. [1794.8s] I take it seriously. [1796.8s] Everybody goes through the night and watch is totally fine. [1799.8s] Cool. [1800.8s] You get up with the sun the next day [1802.8s] and Thaddeus is the last one to take [1804.8s] the last little bit of watch. [1806.8s] And everybody's packing up [1808.8s] and getting ready to move on from the camp. [1811.8s] Perfect. [1812.8s] And head into that misty forest. [1815.8s] Well, I was hoping we'd be moving on up [1817.8s] to that deluxe apartment in the sky. [1819.8s] Well, eventually. [1820.8s] That's where Grancis should be heading, [1822.8s] but apparently not. [1823.8s] Yeah. [1824.8s] Thaddeus says, Grancis, what? [1828.8s] You know when people leave you, [1830.8s] but you just don't feel like they've left? [1832.8s] Grancis was that kind of presence, you know? [1835.8s] Yeah. [1836.8s] Yep, I know that. [1838.8s] Also, I saved a couple pancakes [1841.8s] that he made there in my pack. [1843.8s] It's like he's always with me. [1845.8s] How old are those pancakes? [1849.8s] Hard to say. [1850.8s] And Thea kind of trudges off to the forest. [1852.8s] He put that same stuff on it that he put on the grungs, [1855.8s] so it was good for six months. [1857.8s] Oh, I guess that makes sense. [1859.8s] All right. [1860.8s] So you guys start trekking into the misty forest. [1865.8s] So you know there are different elven settlements [1869.8s] within the misty forest. [1871.8s] Do I know any of those elven settlements? [1873.8s] Do I have family anywhere? [1875.8s] I don't know. [1876.8s] Where is your family from, Thea? [1878.8s] Oh, no. [1879.8s] Don't look at your character sheet, [1880.8s] because you guys never came up with family backstories. [1883.8s] I wasn't looking for my kids. [1884.8s] Karla came up with the fact that she has six brothers, [1886.8s] but nothing about anybody's parents or lineage. [1888.8s] I don't even remember that. [1889.8s] I can't remember. [1890.8s] I can't. [1891.8s] I can't be held responsible [1893.8s] by any kind of saying game. [1895.8s] So everybody's homework for next week. [1897.8s] Pick a point on the map where your species comes from [1902.8s] and come up with where you come from. [1904.8s] OK, good, because I can't do that right now. [1906.8s] Today's not the day. [1907.8s] No, I said before next week. [1908.8s] I know. [1909.8s] Yeah, and you're going to need to text us that, [1911.8s] because I will forget as soon as we stop recording. [1913.8s] Oh, motherfucker. [1915.8s] Yep, got it. [1916.8s] I'm going to go put it in my calendar. [1918.8s] OK. [1920.8s] So yeah, you guys start heading along a path of sorts. [1925.8s] And it comes to a clearing that has a large boulder in the center of it [1932.8s] and splits into two paths, [1934.8s] one more towards the north [1936.8s] and one more towards the south. [1938.8s] Anybody got a preference here? [1940.8s] How south sound everyone? [1942.8s] Good. [1943.8s] Sounds good. [1944.8s] Good decisiveness, Flint. [1945.8s] I like it. [1946.8s] I think we should just walk until we reach a settlement. [1951.8s] I'm sure the Elven villages talk to one another. [1954.8s] If things are going down with Nerenvane, [1958.8s] they're all bound to know about it and give us some sort of information. [1962.8s] Seems plausible. [1964.8s] I agree. [1965.8s] We got to find some people and find out what's going on here. [1967.8s] So yeah, you guys turn south and you carry on for a little ways [1972.8s] and you travel for a few hours and you come to what looks like a small settlement. [1980.8s] It's very quiet, though. [1982.8s] It doesn't look like there's any people or anything in there. [1985.8s] Thea calls out. [1986.8s] Hello? [1988.8s] Is anyone here? [1990.8s] No answer. [1991.8s] And what do we see? [1992.8s] Just like a few huts or...? [1995.8s] Yep. [1996.8s] There's a few wooden huts of sort. [2001.8s] Everybody make a... [2004.8s] I assume you're looking around and stuff. [2005.8s] So make an investigation check. [2008.8s] A nat 20. [2009.8s] No, why are we rolling so well for shitty thing? [2012.8s] Well, I got a three, so I just... [2014.8s] Yeah, six. [2016.8s] Okay, I see stuff. [2017.8s] You guys are picking your noses. [2019.8s] Nularaaaa and Flint are a little more in the lead [2023.8s] and they're kind of looking around at the huts, kind of peering in. [2026.8s] It looks like there's been a scuffle in there of sorts, [2029.8s] but then Thea and Thaddeus come up behind them [2033.8s] and just grab their head and point it up. [2038.8s] And you look up and everybody sees a second level to this settlement, [2046.8s] which is a treetop settlement. [2050.8s] And you see pulley systems that look like they lead down. [2055.8s] But again, there's nobody that you can see walking along any of the gang planks. [2059.8s] There's nobody through any of the windows that you can see [2062.8s] or the openings that you can see. [2064.8s] It looks like this settlement has been abandoned of sorts. [2071.8s] I call up. [2073.8s] Hello, my name is Thea Amastasia. [2077.8s] Is anybody up there? [2079.8s] We've come to help. [2082.8s] You call a couple times and you hear a... [2087.8s] Everybody's looking around up. [2089.8s] And you hear a growl come from behind you. [2095.8s] I spin around. [2097.8s] You are about 15 feet from a large, snarling winter wolf. [2108.8s] It doesn't look like it's making a move to attack you, [2112.8s] but it doesn't look like it's friendly at the moment. [2115.8s] Can I do an animal handling roll? [2118.8s] Do it! [2120.8s] I don't even know what that means, but I never get to... [2122.8s] Handle that animal, girl! [2125.8s] Oh, God. [2127.8s] I threw it. I got to try again. [2129.8s] You were so excited. [2130.8s] I was. I was so excited because I always try and do this to something [2133.8s] that's clearly attacking us and it does not work, of course. [2137.8s] It's like on top of you. You're like, animal handling. [2141.8s] You can do it with advantage if you want there. [2144.8s] That's okay. I had a good roll. [2146.8s] I have a plus six, so I'm pretty good at it anyway. [2149.8s] I had a 17. [2152.8s] I'm like, hey, puppy. [2155.8s] You know, general dog chit chat like you do. [2159.8s] Sure. [2161.8s] You step between Thea and the winter wolf, [2163.8s] and you're trying to calm it down. [2164.8s] It seems to soften in its face [2167.8s] and kind of give you a little bit of a confused look, [2170.8s] but it stops snarling at you. [2171.8s] Like the dog head tilt? [2173.8s] Yeah. [2175.8s] I mean, I lean over. [2177.8s] I lean over Nularaaa's shoulder and I whisper in her ear, [2180.8s] if you talk to me like that when I'm a dog, I'll bite you. [2186.8s] Hey, good idea. [2188.8s] If you turn into a dog, can you talk to that dog? [2191.8s] We can talk to that dog. [2192.8s] Hello, are you a person in there? [2195.8s] I say it in Elvis. [2196.8s] The winter wolf doesn't say anything, [2199.8s] and you hear from behind it come through the trees, [2202.8s] a bellowing gruff voice that you've heard before, [2206.8s] calling, Laska, Laska, come back. [2209.8s] And Delaine Winterhound comes out and says, [2212.8s] there you guys are. [2213.8s] Hey, Delaine. [2216.8s] What's up? [2217.8s] How are you? [2218.8s] Our airship crashed. [2219.8s] It was kind of bad. [2220.8s] I'm glad we ran into you. [2227.8s] Well, hello. [2228.8s] I'm your Dungeon Master, Russ More. [2229.8s] Thank you for joining us for episode 32 of Dumbgeons and Dragons, [2233.8s] titled, Fireside Reflection. [2235.8s] It was a nice episode that I feel gave Tom, [2238.8s] Carl, and Amy a chance to practice some NPC chat [2241.8s] and continue treating NPCs as real people [2244.8s] who have their own story to tell. [2246.8s] Quick thing before we get into this business, [2248.8s] go check out a new podcast called, [2250.8s] Tales from the Five Nations. [2252.8s] It's an actual play podcast in the Eberron setting, [2255.8s] using the Savage World system, [2257.8s] and it is super fun and very well done. [2259.8s] It's put together by David Ginsburg, [2261.8s] who is the creator of Tales from the Fandom [2263.8s] and longtime friend of the podcast. [2265.8s] I'm going to link it in the description below. [2267.8s] Go check them out and show them some love. [2269.8s] I think you're really going to enjoy it. [2270.8s] We just announced that we will be starting [2272.8s] a monthly live stream hangout in March [2275.8s] for explorer and adventurer level patrons. [2278.8s] Big things are happening over there, [2279.8s] and we want you to join us. [2281.8s] If you're new to the Dumb Dragon community, [2283.8s] just in general, [2284.8s] or if you've never done so before, [2286.8s] something that really also helps every podcast [2288.8s] is dropping a five-star rating in review [2291.8s] for the podcasts you love on Apple Podcasts [2294.8s] or Stitcher or Podknife [2296.8s] is another place you can do that. [2298.8s] All of our social media links [2299.8s] can be found at dumbdragons.com. [2301.8s] And, oh, we just started [2303.8s] a new Dumbgeons and Dragons group on Facebook. [2306.8s] Not a page, we have a page still, [2308.8s] but as well a group. [2309.8s] Link is in the description, [2311.8s] where we have a small but growing community [2313.8s] of people who love to talk about the show [2315.8s] and D&D in general. [2316.8s] So come on over, share your stories, [2318.8s] share your ideas, and check us out there. [2320.8s] The next episode will be out February 28th, [2323.8s] when we will be joined for a super fun episode [2325.8s] by Michael and Kyle from American Gods Cast. [2329.8s] Let's see what's happening back at Fireside though. [2331.8s] Oh, and don't forget to send Carla [2333.8s] some birthday wishes. [2334.8s] She won't tell you, [2335.8s] but she really does love them. [2337.8s] Have a great couple weeks. [2338.8s] We'll talk to you soon. [2345.8s] Yeah, it seems like nothing really good [2348.8s] has been going on anywhere. [2350.8s] My reports clearly have been right, [2354.8s] and King Melandrich is full of shit. [2357.8s] That's why his eyes are brown. [2360.8s] You noticed that, did you? [2362.8s] Yeah, pretty clear. [2363.8s] So you've met Laska? [2365.8s] Laska says, hey, what's up? [2368.8s] What's up, Laska? [2369.8s] I was just gonna try and bite your face off, [2372.8s] but you gave me the whole good puppy thing, [2376.8s] and it felt kind of nice. [2378.8s] It felt kind of nice. [2379.8s] So I just thought you didn't want to do any harm. [2383.8s] Hey, appreciate it. [2385.8s] Totally appreciate it. [2386.8s] Hey, Delaine, what have you learned? [2388.8s] We've only been here overnight. [2390.8s] Well, I've been through a couple settlements like this. [2392.8s] This one looks like they may have got warning [2395.8s] before attacks came, [2397.8s] but the last one that I was at is a slaughter. [2401.8s] Were you coming from the south, right? [2403.8s] No, he's coming from the north. [2405.8s] Coming from the north, okay. [2406.8s] Waterdeep is from your current location. [2408.8s] Sorry, I'm having a trouble. [2409.8s] From your current location, [2410.8s] Waterdeep is north and west towards the coast. [2413.8s] Okay. [2414.8s] So you're very close. [2416.8s] Misty Forest is on the other side of the serpent hills [2419.8s] from where you were when you were hunting for ram. [2424.8s] Just if you're trying to plot it out on a map there. [2427.8s] This is the first settlement we've come across. [2430.8s] The others are looking worse? [2432.8s] Yeah, the other one that I went to, [2437.8s] there were no survivors left. [2440.8s] Everyone was killed by what looks like a dragon attack or sword. [2447.8s] So it leads me to believe that cult attacks are happening [2451.8s] and they have a dragon, [2453.8s] which does not bode well. [2456.8s] We have actually seen that dragon. [2458.8s] You have? [2461.8s] Yes. [2462.8s] Just yesterday. [2465.8s] Which dragon? [2467.8s] Big black dragon. [2469.8s] Yeah, that one. [2470.8s] That's more disturbing because reports from my agents [2474.8s] from the Emerald Enclave state that a green dragon [2478.8s] has been seen in the area. [2480.8s] So there's more than one. [2482.8s] Well, yes. [2484.8s] I mean, we're fighting the cult of the dragon, but... [2487.8s] The cult of the dragon? [2490.8s] Now there's two? [2492.8s] They're going to need to rename. [2494.8s] That's fair. [2496.8s] They also report that there is a settlement [2498.8s] in the Misty Forest that is still standing [2501.8s] and that may be the best place to start. [2505.8s] That city is Altend. [2508.8s] I can give you directions. [2510.8s] I'm supposed to meet up with some other agents [2512.8s] and I can come meet you after I'm done with that. [2515.8s] The latest reports have them holding their ground right now, [2519.8s] so everybody who may have fled from any of these other settlements [2523.8s] might be there as well, [2524.8s] and they may have reports that might help us. [2527.8s] How far away is that settlement? [2529.8s] It may take you a day to get there. [2532.8s] Okay, I guess. [2534.8s] Point us in the right direction. [2535.8s] We need a destination, [2537.8s] and that sounds like a good place to start [2539.8s] figuring out what's going on and where Narenvain is [2542.8s] and, you know, hack if he's evil or not. [2544.8s] You know, just run out of the millstone. [2545.8s] Or hack. [2546.8s] Yeah, absolutely. [2547.8s] And he gives you directions. [2550.8s] He says most of the way there is path, [2553.8s] which it looks like you've been following [2555.8s] one of the paths from the edge of the forest, [2557.8s] but you will have to cut through some area [2559.8s] where there's not. [2561.8s] So are you guys okay going through the forest? [2564.8s] Well, this is my preferred terrain. [2568.8s] Wonderful. Mine as well. [2571.8s] Or something like that. [2572.8s] Favored terrain. There we go. [2574.8s] All right. [2575.8s] Well, as long as you guys think you can make it okay, [2577.8s] he gives you directions and he says, [2579.8s] I will meet up with you. [2582.8s] I should be only about half a day behind you [2584.8s] once I get to where I need to be. [2586.8s] Sounds good. [2587.8s] And he calls for Laska, [2590.8s] and they head off back into the forest. [2594.8s] I guess we head in that direction, I assume. [2597.8s] Yeah? [2598.8s] Yeah, friends? [2599.8s] Yes. [2600.8s] So you've been traveling for most of the morning now, [2603.8s] and you walk along the path, [2605.8s] and you get to the point where he said [2609.8s] it turns from path to just open brush, [2613.8s] and you start heading in there, [2615.8s] and you feel, after walking a little while, [2618.8s] you get the sense that something's been following you, [2623.8s] Nulara and Nulara especially. [2627.8s] You see out of the corner of your eye [2630.8s] flashes of different color, [2633.8s] something small, not something large, [2636.8s] and you hear almost faint laughter [2640.8s] coming through the trees. [2642.8s] Okay, I'm going to do a... [2645.8s] Sorry, I had to find the book to... [2647.8s] because I actually wanted to see [2649.8s] what favored terrain got me, [2651.8s] so I'm going to do some good stuff. [2653.8s] So I guess we'll do a perception check [2658.8s] to see if I have an idea of what is, [2662.8s] I don't know, following us, [2664.8s] or what makes that sound, [2665.8s] or the light flashes, or whatever, [2667.8s] just to see if I can figure out what that's all about. [2670.8s] Sure. [2671.8s] And my proficiency bonus is doubled, [2676.8s] because I'm amazing at this. [2678.8s] I'm going to proceed with the shit out of this. [2681.8s] 29? I got a 29. [2683.8s] Do you alert anybody to what you're doing, [2686.8s] or do you stop? [2687.8s] What are you doing when you do this? [2689.8s] Yeah, I think so. [2691.8s] Probably just kind of like slow down [2694.8s] and do the classic SWAT team maneuver, [2697.8s] like hold up a hand, like wait. [2700.8s] I mean, there's only four of us. [2702.8s] It shouldn't be that hard to get their attention. [2704.8s] Thea gives you a big thumbs up. [2706.8s] Yeah. [2707.8s] And I kind of just do what that winter wolf did [2712.8s] and like cock my head and listen [2714.8s] and try and figure out what's going on. [2716.8s] You hear, you listen for a little while, [2718.8s] and it seems like everything is, the noise has stopped. [2721.8s] And then you hear a snap of a twig off to your right. [2726.8s] And you look, and there's like a rustling brush, [2730.8s] but you can't see an animal, [2732.8s] and you can't quite figure out at first [2735.8s] what would be making the sound. [2737.8s] Who goes there? [2738.8s] I don't think I just wait and let something follow us. [2741.8s] I need to know. Drive me crazy. [2743.8s] You hear kind of a giggling laughter, [2748.8s] two giggling laughters coming from the brush, [2751.8s] and it's moving around a little bit more. [2754.8s] Show yourselves. [2755.8s] The rustling stops, [2757.8s] and you see slowly coming up from behind this bush, [2764.8s] small antlers, and then what looks like a human face, [2769.8s] big smiling, two of them. [2772.8s] And they look like almost bearded sprites [2776.8s] with huge, for their size, [2780.8s] antlers on top of their heads. [2782.8s] And they say, hi. [2794.8s] Music in today's episode was by Kavin McLeod of Incompetech.Filmmusic.io. [2806.8s] Why do Google Hangouts change their name from G-Chat to Google Hangouts? [2811.8s] You know how easy it is to say G-Chat? [2813.8s] Real easy. [2814.8s] You know how irritating it is to say Google Hangouts? [2816.8s] It's a lot more simple. [2817.8s] Just say Gook Hangs. [2819.8s] Just Gook Hangs. [2823.8s] You guys got some Gook Hangs? [2825.8s] Oh, those sweet Gook Hangs. [2827.8s] You can change your mind. [2830.8s] And if you change your mind. [2832.8s] I'm the next in line. [2834.8s] Yes. [2835.8s] I didn't know the lyrics or I would have jumped right into it. [2840.8s] I'd have pretty good chuckle when Russ Pride Grants is back. [2844.8s] I'll be perfectly honest. [2851.8s] One thing you should know is Grants is my pride and joy. [2856.8s] He was supposed to be the greatest NPC of all time. [2859.8s] I think he is. [2860.8s] He's certainly the one we've had the most feelings about. [2864.8s] Oh, yes. [2865.8s] That's true. [2866.8s] Yeah, the most interactions. [2868.8s] All those feelings. [2870.8s] I'm sorry. [2871.8s] Is anyone else picturing Thaddeus like Sam Elliott? [2878.8s] Yeah, I could see that. [2879.8s] I am now. [2880.8s] That is exactly it. [2881.8s] Because he's an older gentleman, a little rougher on the edges. [2886.8s] Yeah, in my head he's Sam Elliott. [2889.8s] I like it. [2890.8s] Perfect. [2891.8s] If anyone knows Sam Elliott and he wants to guest star on our podcast, please make that happen. [2896.8s] Who are you talking to? [2898.8s] Anyone listening. [2899.8s] Listeners? [2900.8s] Oh, anyone. [2901.8s] Anyone. [2902.8s] You're more than welcome to if you know Sam Elliott, but I was more so talking to our listeners. [2907.8s] I don't know if Sam Elliott tweets, so I probably don't have like a tweet venue. [2912.8s] And you know, I only have two more favors with him. [2916.8s] That is the question. [2918.8s] I mean, that's all we really need is the mustache to come on. [2921.8s] Wait, how many favors did you have originally? [2924.8s] Four. [2925.8s] What did you use the first two on? [2927.8s] No kidding. [2928.8s] Can't say. [2930.8s] Oh, wow. [2931.8s] Dumbgeons & Dragons is a Dumb Dragons production.
